manic memes and other mindspace invaders, illustrated

Memes are cunning and fecund. They teem. They multiply. They invade. They rampage mercilessly through your most cherished beliefs.

Now available at Amazon, "Manic Memes is a disturbing if not downright annoying repository of unusual thoughts, dreams, sayings, prayers, ideas, epiphanies and miscellaneous misbegotten malarkey!"

MANIC MEMES holds no fewer than 184 memes from eight meme-species, each perfectly adapted to their respective environments:

  • Mind your Brains
  • New Age Crapola
  • Metaphysical Mumbo Jumbo
  • Gods, Devils and Demiurges
  • Love, Life and Death
  • Human Culture
  • Miscellaneous Pompousities
  • “It’s Only Words …”

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary a meme is “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.”

As varied as the minds they infest, memes can be words, phrases, images, perfumes, melodies, styles of beard, mathematical formulae, recipes for roast chicken, medical procedures, rites and rituals and much more.

Memes are the mindchildren of controversial biologist, Richard Dawkins. The word “meme” first appeared in Dawkins’ book, The Selfish Gene (1976), in which he applies the principles of Darwinian evolution to human culture.

They may not be flesh-and-blood, but memes are born (come into being), reproduce (by spreading from one “host” mind to another) and die (when they are forgotten). As immaterial organisms they reproduce by various non-fleshly means, including writing, speech, music, fashion, depending on the species of the meme.

Memes compete with each other for mindspace in their human hosts. A “catchy” song spreads quicker and further than a less memorable one. Memes that breed less efficiently become extinct. Clearly, the Darwinian “survival of the fittest” meme itself is a busy little breeder!

So good to be back, SRS! Before I even begin to consider reformatting my own material as e-books, I might have to buy a Kindle (although a tablet seems like a workable substitute; anyway, I'm still reluctant to read large chunks of text off a screen for more than 10 minutes!)

The reformatting requied is fairly minimal -- just a couple indents here and there. Some page breaks. A table of contents.

I use Word, which is more than up to the task. It's the covers that take time, not to mention blood sweat and tears/.

Apparebntly, more than 10 000 new e-books are loaded into the Amazon store every day.

I haven' got a Kindle, or any e-reader hardware. You can read e-books on your PC or smartphone too.

GREat to hear from you, thanks for stopping by, Cheers, S
